Everything you need to know about CBD
Although CBD (cannabidiol) is quite a trendy product, it remains relatively unknown, if not misunderstood.
While many use it for its natural benefits, few truly understand what this molecule is, its effects, the risks it poses and, above all, how to use it.
In this article, we provide you with an introduction to CBD. This guide covers everything you need to know: its legality, effects, possible side effects and a list of the many products that contain it!
What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a molecule one can naturally find in hemp and/or cannabis. More specifically, it is a cannabinoid just like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBG (cannabigerol) and CBN (cannabinol) as well as many others.
CBD has been extensively studied, particularly for its supposed therapeutic effects, especially in people prone to stress and chronic anxiety, without causing side effects, intoxication or addiction, which is a much better solution, to the eyes of some people, than traditional medicines that, on the contrary, might suppose : headaches, nausea and sickness, drowsiness etc.
Is CBD legal?
CBD’s legality is quite a common question. Cannabidiol is often (and wrongly) compared with THC. Just for clarity, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychotropic molecule in cannabis. It produces a ‘high’ and is addictive, unlike CBD.
In fact, unlike THC, CBD and products that are directly derived from the substance are legal within the European Union. That said, while buying, selling and consuming CBD products is legal, some restrictions automatically apply.
CBD products containing more than 0.3% THC are strictly prohibited. Possession or use of such products may lead to heavy fines. Depending on the quantity you have, it might also lead you to jail. Always be cautious, with your products and where they’re coming from.
What are the effects of CBD?
CBD is a natural molecule with relaxing effects. It targets the natural mechanisms behind stress and anxiety, such as cortisol (the stress hormone), helping to regulate or even reduce it, thereby promoting calm and relaxation.
CBD also seems to influence the mechanisms involved in pain perception, particularly neuropathic pain. Several studies suggest that CBD-rich oils may help relieve symptoms in patients with conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis.
Finally, CBD is considered as a potentially useful natural aid in order to manage addiction to painkillers, alcohol, tobacco or even THC. However, these claims should be treated with caution. While some studies exist, more research is needed to confirm them.
CBD is not a medicine
Please note that CBD is not a medicine. It is not intended to replace advice from a healthcare professional or prescribed treatment. On the contrary, CBD should be viewed as a natural wellbeing supplement with minimal known negative health impacts… Though caution is advised regarding potential interactions with medication, particularly for pregnant women or people dealing with medical conditions.
What are the side effects of CBD?
Does CBD have side effects? To be clear and direct, the answer is “Yes”. Note, however, that they are generally mild and rare. (As mentioned earlier, CBD is not addictive and may even help manage certain addictions.)
That being said, even high-quality CBD products can cause mild side effects in some people, mainly with excessive doses. These may include nausea, headaches or diarrhea. Though unpleasant, these symptoms are temporary and typically resolve within a few hours.
How to determine the right dosage?
The optimal amount of CBD to consume is very personal.
Indeed, each and every person is built different. Therefore, dosages will never be the same from one person to another.
Factors such as the following are taken into account when determining the dosage:
- the individual’s gender,
- age,
- height-to-weight ratio,
- the symptoms to be targeted (stress, pain…),
- the CBD potency of the product to be consumed.
The different CBD products that are currently available
You can find many different types of CBD products on the market. The one people like and use the most? CBD flowers that are grown indoors or in greenhouses. They can also be grown hydroponically (using nutrient-rich water as a substrate).
CBD flowers can be consumed by inhalation, vaporisation or combustion, although this method is not recommended as it can have a huge impact on your lungs (things are even worse if you add tobacco).
CBD oils are also very popular. This is a healthy, quick and safe way to consume CBD. These oils, packaged in 10 or 30 ml bottles. They contain a specific dose of CBD (5, 10, 20, 30%) and are taken using the integrated dropper. Two to three drops are usually enough to feel the effects within 5 to 15 minutes, for a 3 to 4 hours duration.
You can also find, buy and use CBD resins and hash, e-liquids for electronic cigarettes, cosmetics (creams, mostly) and other edibles such as CBD gummies and sweets. Let’s not forget infusions and pre-rolled sticks containing various varieties of the best forms of CBD flowers, which are currently the flagship products.
